This grid refers to location 34 on the excavation
plan. It is one of 20 - 25 bunkers. They were dug down about
4-5 feet. Pits, a ridge pole and end post were erected down the center and
logs laid on as a roof. Reeds were piled on top of the logs to stop dirt from falling
through, then 2-3 feet of
dirt was layered on top. These bunkers were constructed to protect the Tuscarora
within the fort from bullets, explosions and shrapnel and to keep the women and children safe.
All the men had
rifles, only the women and children had bows and arrows. Tunnels existed
which allowed them to go from
bunker to bunker under ground.
