In Mohawk Country : Early Narratives of a Native People (The Iroquois and Their Neighbors)
by Dean R. Snow (Editor), Charles T. Gehring (Editor), William A. Starna

For centuries the history of the Mohawk Valley has been shaped by the complex relationships among the valley's native inhabitants, the Mohawk Indians, and its colonists, starting with the Dutch. In Mohawk Country collects for the first time the principal documentary narratives that reveal the full scope of this Mohawk-settle interaction. Some of the sources have never before been translated into English, and several have not been previously published. Of those works that had been published, nearly all are out of print. These records bring to life the rapid changes experienced by both the Mohawk and their European neighbors. Wars, catastrophic epidemics, and the diplomacy of nearly two centuries are all well represented in this volume. Fascinating cultural differences are also unearthed: the French, for example dealt with the Mohawk much differently than the Dutch or the English. Just as importantly, these writings reveal - from the unique perspectives of the observer - the Mohawk's struggle to retain their culture in the midst of evolving political, social, and physical environments.

On Second Thought : A Compilation (American Indian Literature and Critical Studies, Vol 18)
by Maurice Kenny, Joseph Bruchac

As one of the earliest and strongest voices in contemporary American Indian literature, Maurice Kenny has proved himself to be very much a "high-steel" Iroquois - a Mohawk famed for scaling the heights of New York City and forging a contemporary Native American identity known nationwide. This latest collection includes old and new favorites in poetry, fiction, criticism, and political commentary, plus an unusual literary memoir of New York in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s - upstate, Manhattan, and Brooklyn - from a Native American poet's point of view.

Turtle Turtle Belly : A Novel (American Indian Literature and Critical Studies Series, Vol 25)
by Joel Monture

Sam's mother is Mohawk, and his father is white; his own skin is the color of a turtle's belly. Attempting to escape her abusive marriage, Sam's mother takes him to her reservation, where he then witnesses his father's brutal murder of his mother. Raised by a loving aunt and uncle, he can never forget his mixed blood and never feels completely accepted by the reservation residents. His talent wins him an art scholarship to Dartmouth, but the transition proves too much, and he takes up with a truck-stop waitress and sometime prostitute as an antidote to the stuffy academic world. When he returns to the reservation, with its stifling boredom punctuated by wild benders and loud arguments with his girlfriend, he struggles to immerse himself in his art and reinvent his spirituality. At times, Monture's narrative soars with the power of his precise imagery, but at other times, the plot falls flat. An uneven novel, then, but recommended for its realistic depiction of reservation life.
