Edition of Prints

CREATION

The traditions of the Iroquois account of Creation have been a part of the rich spiritual and cultural life of the "People of the Longhouse" for generations. The events and meaning of this narrative are traditionally carried through time in the memories of the Elders. It is a sacred account fundamental to native culture and identity. Its deep meaning has always been treated with the greatest respect and retold with dignity and sanctity.

Today it is still retold perhaps most vividly and truthfully by Chief Jake Thomas, chief in the Cayuga Nation, born into the Snipe Clan, and named , "Descending Cloud." He is from the Six Nations Reserve in the Grand River Country. His relations are the people descended from the original Five Nations which formed the vast Iroquois Confederacy prior to the arrival of peoples from Europe to this Turtle Island. Chief Thomas is among the most highly respected Elders in the Iroquois Culture. Under personal supervision and advice, the artist Ivan Kocsis was commissioned to depict eight important scenes from this story. Mr. Kocsis is well known himself for his under-standing and beautiful portrayal of the First Peoples of North America.

Now the first four of these paintings have been reproduced in a very limited edition of 500 printed in Canada with a high quality lithographic process on fine coated art stock. These prints have captured all the colour and detail of the originals and are ready to be mounted and framed.

This edition of prints is significant to the retelling of the Creation Story for all Native peoples as well as others interested in the foundation of the indigenous culture in North America.

Each print measures approximately 19" by 24"; #2 and #3 are in the horizontal format; #1 and #4 are vertical. The cost is $25.00 each or the complete set of four is $100.00.
